Know the Novel (Part 1!)

by - October 10, 2022

Hey, everybody! It's the time of year again when some people start writing books. Not me. I don't have time because of College. But I do want to share my current WIP--the one I've been working on for the past few months--because Christine finally released her Know the Novel tag for this year! And I figure that's a perfect time to introduce the new book :)

You can find out more about Know the Novel here. For now, I'm so so excited to introduce my WIP!

1. What first sparked the idea for this novel?

At risk of spoilers...the story I'm about to share with you is a light prequel to the Pentegreens series. It comes from a long, long process of trying to humanize the relationship between two characters, a relationship that has done nothing but give me grief. I wanted it to mean something, and to take something from my own soul, something important. It turned into a story of redemption, of dark deeds and impossible saves, of assassins and new hope. It also was lightly or maybe heavily inspired by a Havok flash fiction I wrote (but I won't tell you which one yet...)

2. Share a blurb (or just an overall summary)!

Knife in the Back

The kingdom of Brodie is divided—one king rules the heart of the capital, but the rest of the city is divided between four assassin lords. Or it should be. No one has heard of Lord Nightmare for a generation. The imbalance has created a perfect opportunity for the other lords to take all of the power…if they have the courage to defy a king.

Estelle owes her life to Lord Darkfire, and works for him happily, slaying all his enemies. But when his quest for power causes her to break the one moral rule she had left, she flees into the streets, searching for some form of new life. But war has painted a target on her back, and Darkfire is not the only lord searching for her.

Dancing in a circus by day and seeking the blood of her enemies by night, Annie is ready to return the Nightmare clan to its place of power. Doing that may be harder than she expects, though—Lord Darkfire will not back down. Good thing Annie’s never retreated from a fight.

Zayn is the king’s personal bodyguard—and a Hunter. His own personal vendetta against the assassin lords drives him to search for their identities before they can take away anything else he holds dear. But this search may claim more of his soul than he ever expected to lose.

When worlds collide, war will break out. But the balance has been broken, and now only one lord can be victorious…

3. Where does the story take place? What are some of your favorite aspects of the setting?

This novel takes place largely in the city of Brodie. Brodie is a large city built into the banks of a river, and it's in the North, so it's cold and cloudy all the time. A cold wind from the coast is constantly blasting the inhabitants. The city itself is divided in five districts--the center of the city belongs to the king, and each of the other four districts is the domain of one of the assassin lords.

This is a story I'm trying to weave a lot of history into, and I'm really enjoying that aspect. It's also set in the world of Pentegreens, so each of the characters has their own distinct magical abilities in varying degrees of strength and effectiveness, which is lots of fun to play with. I'm also tightening the rules of the magic system--the assassins wield their powers in very different ways from the cast of Pentegreens.

Finally, I decided to bite the bullet and infuse this story with steampunk elements. Because there's nothing better than steampunk, fantasy university, and that sort of thing.

4. Tell us about your protagonist(s).

Estelle: my female lead and favorite character currently. She's had a hard life, and her family backstory is far from great. She joined the Darkfire clan because she did not see any other way out of the life she was living, but quickly grew to see it as a second family. A horrific accident during a clan battle left her with a bad leg and an even stronger power than before. Overall, she's a lover and a fighter.
bad leg//struggles//faked smiles//double knives//the memories are so heavy//exhaustion//things will get better someday right?

Tristan: bad boy who thinks he has a heart of gold. Really, he's just a morally messed up, problem-ridden hot mess, trying to fix things in the worst way possible. He's going to have a pretty massive character arc. He's also convinced that only he can fix the world they live in, which is obviously not true in the slightest...
things will only get better if we make them better//masks//deadly power//more, more, more power//lonely at the top//long sigh

Zayn: the most morally good character in the whole series. He wishes he was charming, charismatic, and bubbly, able to command a room, but instead he's fighting a constant war with PTSD and his conscience. Despite that, though, he will always choose to do the right thing, even when it's hard. He's a mess, but he's not willing to admit it very often.

morality//smiley emojis//happiness//large family//fire powers//everything is a mess but that's okay//i'm not an optimist but my best friend isn't either//hang on

5. Who (or what) is the antagonist?

Annie: hard though I've tried, I cannot picture Annie as anybody but Marilyn. Haha. She's a little bit crazy, but her biggest goal is to conquer, to come out on top, and to finally fill the void in her chest with either love or power. Either way will do.

what if we found love?//needs a bf//tightrope//pink dresses//we're all mad here//everybody loves me? right?//power will make me happy

6. What excites you the most about this novel?

Finally getting to write a giant epic fantasy again! My favorite thing is writing messy, complex, ensemble cast books, and this is the book of my dreams for that.

7. Is this going to be a series? standalone? something else?

Currently a duology! Or maybe a little longer....mwahaha

8. Are you plotting? pantsing? plansting?

Currently I'm plantsing this book. I tend to write my outline like a Wikipedia summary of a plot, and then use that as a springboard. It leaves space for the characters to do their thing, but gives me a guiding path for them to follow.

9. Name a few unique elements in this story.

-Fantasy steampunk isn't super unique, but it's my favorite ;)
-Fantasy university!
-The love triangle is actually really respectful (depending on which angle you look at)

10. Share some fun “extras” of the story (a song or full playlist, some aesthetics, a collage, a Pinterest board, a map you’ve made, a special theme you’re going to incorporate, ANYTHING you want to share!).

Well, since we're 60k into this beast...here are some snippets ;)

Estelle lifted her head to the ceiling and hummed a single low note, deep in her throat. Here in the tunnels, she could sing as much as she wanted, with no one to hear her or question.
“So raise your sails, head for the skies,
You’ll soon be where your heart desires,
Hold on, little one, just hold on tight,
Someday we’ll all see the light…”
The song tasted familiar on her tongue. So, so familiar. She sighed and ran a hand over her eyes. Perhaps her mother had once sung that song to her in the cradle. Before…
The tunnel sloped steeply downward, and then she came around the corner and was there, in the common room.

Smoothing down the front of her bright pink, frilly costume, Annie added a smile that did not need to be faked. This was who she was, and the truest moment of her soul—here, poised above the world, her eyes fixed on the gossamer line of the tightrope. Her foot in its soft slipper hung in space over the line, pointed to a perfect line, and she took in a deep breath. Glittering lights surrounded her on every side, but she sat enthroned above the lights, wrapped in a throne of darkness.
Each of her hands held one end of the balancing pole that centered her. These stunts came like breathing. Slowly, softly, she lowered her foot onto the wire and stepped out onto it.
The wire moved under her feet like it always did. She danced forward and lifted one leg high. Her pole slid out of her right hand; she ducked down low on the line, catching it with the free hand, and lifted her leg in a perfect point. The darkness erupted into cheers and shouts. She spun back, regaining her balance, and gripped the pole again. The ground spun past below, but she was already moving again.
Her body spun on the line, and she dropped from the air.

The Trials were tomorrow, and tensions in the capital were running high. Thankfully, spirits were too.
Zayn walked past booths draped in fabric and under garlands of brightly colored flowers, dangling between the hoods of the booths. A bunch of sunflowers adorned each booth’s hood, dangling upside down for good luck. Zayn adjusted his bright blue jacket, a steal of a find at the discounted fabric store, and walked toward the booth closest to him.
Jashin, the king’s captain of the guard, waved to him with a bright smile. “Zayn! Have you tried the sun tarts this festival? They almost taste like the year we competed!”
Zayn chuckled. “They haven’t tasted the same since that year,” he said, and joined Jashin in front of the booth. Its counter was decked out with sweets, each nestled on their own individual cloth, to be returned when the pastry was done. Eager children swarmed the counter, their hands reaching out for the pastries, to the chagrin of their long-suffering parents. One little child, wearing a bright yellow bonnet over her black curls, reached up to grab a muffin, giggling like a maniac. Her mother swooped her up and nestled her close, covering her face with kisses while she giggled louder.
Zayn’s heart wrenched watching it. This. This was why he did this, year after why. This was why they allowed it. For these children.
“What do you think?” he asked, pointing down to them. “What do you see when you look at them?”
“Our future.” Jashin took a bite of his pastry, jelly smearing onto his fingers. “Our past, our present, our future, everything we’ve ever stood for. How about you?”
“Funny little things who deserve a day of joy.” Zayn took one of the pastries, tossing a coin to the older woman working the booth. “And I hope they get it. I hope they never have to know what it means to experience fear.”
