The Writer's Tag (In Which Faith Writes)

by - April 25, 2017

Hey guys! Mirriam Neal did this tag like a couple of days ago and she tagged the whole wide world to do it. And so I shall. And it will be wonderful and you will learn the answers to things you have been wondering about since you met me. Like how I write like I'm running out of time.

^^^This is me. Writing.
I wish.

1. WHAT GENRES, STYLES, AND TOPICS DO YOU WRITE ABOUT?

Me: HAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA.
Right now, the answer is: pretty much anything and everything. I love fantasy with all my soul, but I've been writing a lot of contemporary too, and my current WIP is dystopia. Not sci-fi dystopia, though. Just futuristic dystopia. I am not trendy.
Looking at my prospective works list, I have the following genres:
  • Fantasy: 7 books (plus 1 mythology type fantasy)
  • Science fiction: 2 books
  • Contemporary: 3 books
  • Historical: 2 books
  • Dystopia: 3 books
I am biased. I know.
The styles and topics depend on the work, to be honest. XD

2. HOW LONG HAVE YOU BEEN WRITING?

Since I was four. So... eleven years.
Yes, I started when I was four. In preschool, I had a teacher who I absolutely hated. I'm sure there was nothing wrong with her and I don't even remember her name, but I loathed her and wrote a story about hiding from school in a snowstorm. (Note: I grew up in the South, where it snows about once in a blue moon. It's wonderful. {Also, what is a blue moon? Does anyone know?})
Then I didn't write much more until I read the Betsy-Tacy books and decided to be like Betsy and write books while sitting in the tree outside my house. I completed my first story at the age of eight. It was about thirty pages long and had a full plot and about 20 female characters and 3 male characters. #GirlPower
It also had talking animals.
Guys, this is so embarrassing! I'm so sorry that you have to sit through this. It gets better. I promise.

3.WHY DO YOU WRITE?

Because A. I have been doing it for so long, B. I am an introvert with no life and nothing else to do, C. the stories will kill me if I do not write them, and D. I am an INFJ and my brain has so much happening that I cannot function unless I write it down.
On we go.

4. WHEN IS THE BEST TIME TO WRITE?

When I finish school/have freetime/ have a million books on my TBR/need to go visit my friends/ am supposed to be doing something else. Like blogging.

5. PARTS OF WRITING YOU LOVE VS. PARTS YOU HATE?

I love the part where the idea is still in your head but you don' have to write it down just yet and you're still in the still in the honeymoon stage. Anyone else know/love that feeling? Because it is one of the greatest things in the world.
Once I start trying to write it out, the thing kind of loses all its appeal and takes on that things where you would rather die than write the stupid thing. You want to love it... But you don't.
And editing is awful and I hate it with my entire soul. But I really want to like it.

6. HOW DO YOU OVERCOME WRITER'S BLOCK?

I don't get it. Sorry. At least not often. And when I do, I just kind of sit it out until it goes away.

I'll get back to you later when I have figured it out :)

7. ARE YOU WORKING ON SOMETHING AT THE MOMENT?

Editing: Watched, my dystopia that you've heard all about if you've been around my blog for more than five minutes.
Drafting: The King's Daughter, my fantasy novel (and baby/beloved/soul mate.) It WILL NOT FINISH ITSELF WHAT IS WRONG WITH IT. Someone help me.
Mental: Wings, my gritty war story that I mentioned a few posts ago. IT IS SO AWESOME, GUYS. HELP ME. How did I come up with this thing? I don't even know. I look at it and go, "I came up with this idea." And then check every book on Goodreads to make sure that someone else hasn't gotten there first. Because I'm paranoid.

8. WRITING GOALS THIS YEAR:

1. Finish Watched.
2. Finish drafting The King's Daughter (I CAN DO THIS. DEEP BREATHS.)
3. Maybe enter the Rooglewood Contest? I want to but... *nervous laugh* they have to read what you write and tell you if it'll get published. And I don't want that to happen. Hee hee. I'm an author, I promise...
4. Plot Wings and maybe draft it?? (#Goals)
5. Get rid of the plot bunnies
Me at the plot bunnies

So there you have it! An inner look at my writing life, with gifs from Rogue One and Hamilton. (Those things are life, guys. It is so wonderful.)

If you want to do this tag, consider yourself tagged :)

~Faith

What do you think of my answers? Will the plot bunnies ever leave me alone? WILL I FINISH A BOOK THIS YEAR? (Probably not, but we can dream, right?) What are your writing goals for the year? I want to know all the things!

I know and love that feeling, too. It's before I have to worry about plot holes. It's before worry in general. The only thing you have to think about at that point is the story itself, and not how to make it all pretty and grammatically correct.

  4. I looove getting an inside look at each writer's writing life, so this was so fun!

I think it's awesome how you write and explore so many different genres. When I was younger, I only ever wrote medieval fantasy, but as I got older I started testing out some other genres and am SO glad I did. It really stretched me as a writer and is helping me hone in on exactly what I like to write. I mean, medieval fantasy will ALWAYS be my number 1 love, but trying new things has helped me find my style and themes I enjoy writing about.

OH MY GOODNESS. You read the Betsy-Tacy books??? THOSE BOOKS WERE MY CHILDHOOD. AND TEENAGEHOOD. AND SOME ADULTHOOD. I. LOVED. THOSE. BOOKS. It may be because Betsy was me. Like...it was a little unnerving how alike we were, but also awesome. It seems like no on has ever read those books, so it's so exciting knowing someone who has! :D

I 100% know about that honeymoon stage with a book you're talking about! YES!!! And it IS the best, most magical thing. If only it can always stay that way...

YOU CAN TOTALLY FINISH THAT BOOK THIS YEAR!!! I believe in yooouuu!!! You've got this. *fistpump*

    1. It is fun, isn't it? I'm going to do Madelyn's snippet tag later this week -_-

I love experimenting with my writing - and the ideas just come in their genres and leave me to figure it out. I HATE THE PLOT BUNNIES. They are evil. XD I love your medieval fantasy! It's so awesome.

YES I DID. Until I got to the sixth book or so and my mom got freaked out by the romance factor XD I always wanted to be Betsy, but I was never that similar. For example, I think she's an extrovert..... (and I am the furthest thing possible from that XD) They're so underappreciated, aren't they? Especially the later ones.

The honeymoon stage is the best. I wish it would just stay the whole time and then I would be the happiest person ever and would finish a book every month. But... It's not easy. >:(

Thanks :) You have to finish writing something, too, though. Seriously. THE WORLD NEEDS YOUR BOOKS CHRISTINE.

  5. YES TO ANSWER 5. I do this alllll the time. Honeymoons are lovely. It's afterwards that proves the most difficult. Unruly words and such, you know. *shakes head disapprovingly*

I BELIEVE IN YOU! You CAN reach those goals! *confetti and motivational music*

    1. And words sound so different in one's head than they do on paper, have you noticed? I write the same thing I think.... But I'm also one of those people with a visual imagination and it's incredibly difficult to translate that to paper XD

I MUST REACH THEM OR ELSE I WILL FORCE MYSELF TO NEVER LISTEN TO HAMILTON AGAIN. *simultaneous gasps from everyone around the world* I know, now I've said it. You must hold me accountable XD

  6. {ME ME OOOH PICK ME}
    {I KNOW WHAT A BLUE MOON IS}

I definitely understand the attraction of the stage between getting the idea and writing it down. Once I try to put it into words on a page, it without fail comes out so. flat. and stale. I even tend to put off writing the ideas down, so I can keep it in a naively lovely state forever, but I end up forgetting them that way. >.<

I hope King's Daughter starts cooperating! *sends lamingtons for encouragement*

    1. Hahaha. I kind of know, too, but all these expressions that make no sense are so confusing :)

That sounds like how I used to be with ideas. I'd get the idea, write a page of the story, and it would end up awful. So then I'd give up and move to the next one. :)

Thanks! I wrote 2,000 words for it yesterday, which is wonderful. I feel so alive. XD
