Beta Call//If you've ever wanted to read my crazy novel NOW IS YOUR HOUR

by - January 11, 2019

OKAY, YOU GUYS. I'm hyperventilating right now and trying not to flip out, because THIS IS IT! This is the moment where I open this thing up and ask you, my lovely and amazing readers, if you would like a chance to read my novel The King's Daughter.

I guess first off I need to give a second and more important announcement: I've been dropping hints and screaming pretty vocally about it before now, but in case you haven't heard: I AM IN FACT GOING TO REALM MAKERS 2019.

Yes, it's official. As soon as registration opens, I will be the earliest early bird to register, and I will be buying my plane tickets not long after. If you're going to Realm Makers, be sure and let me know--I desperately want to meet you!

Part of going to Realm Makers, though, is that I want to pitch my novel. I want to have a project ready for me to scream vocally, not just through my blog. I want to try to reach out to agents, and while I don't think I'm likely to get any results this time, I think the experience of DOING it will be huge.

However, to be able to do that, I need an edited novel. (Obviously.)

That's why I'm asking y'all for help.

Would you like to beta read The King's Daughter for me?

A Synopsis

Some nightmares can't be escaped.
The world is at war. The land of Venaria, enslaved to the mysterious dictator Dauthang, sends its army to lay seige to King Martin's city. Battles rage, and every shadow could conceal a spy.
In the middle of it all stands Princess Esma--the prize Dauthang seeks. The war that haunts her nightmares grows much closer when a training exercise brings her face to face with a particularly frightening enemy soldier. When that same soldier reappears, claiming to be a deserter, she finds herself entangled deep into the web of danger springing up around her city.
Both sides are fraught with secrets. Trust seems like a thing of the past. Esma will need all of her cunning to navigate the treacherous waters of this war if she's ever to have any chance at peace again...

I know I've screamed about this book many, many times before, and I'll spare y'all from more of that. But before I give you signups, let me give also

A Few Caveats

-This novel is LOOONG. I'm starting to edit part 3 as I write this post, and that part should fly pretty fast and be done before anybody's ready to look at it. (It needs some major fixes, but I know what I'm doing and it will be ready.) But parts 1-2 with the first few chapters of part 3 are pushing 80k; the second draft was over 120k. It's a big book, which leads to the next bit:

-I'm going to need it done by March 17, most likely. Because of my Realm Makers goal, I want to get this beast shipped off to an editor (*cue both the squeals and the terrified screams*) So if you're signing up to read this, you have a little over two months to get through 120k words. I think it's doable, but it's definitely something to keep in mind.

-Also, I don't think I can call my book exactly squeaky clean. It's still very clean, very hope-driven, and it's hopefully just some good fantasy, but I feel the need to mention this part for some of my readers who I know are a bit more sensitive.
As I would do for one of my Goodreads reviews, here's the content list:
A couple of undescribed kisses, one between a married couple and the other two between teenagers.
Some battle sequences with blood and some gore
A magic system where everyone was born with a particular "power" (superpowers, basically), and where these powers can also be overwhelmed or lost
A brief but present torture sequence (it lasts a few paragraphs before the story cuts away)

If that's all cool and you're still maybe interested, read on! XD

I've got this book in Google Docs, and I think I'll be sending it out in three parts (I have three clear act-endings which I like a lot, so I'm just sticking to partitioning it up in that way, like I've been using to edit it with). It'll be sent out in one doc for everyone, so all my readers can see each others' comments (because that way you can all interact and I don't feel like I'm going crazy xD)

Okay, so after ALLLLL of that, HERE IS A SIGNUP FORM.

Please note that this form will close in a week (Friday, January the 18th).

If you signed up, thank you so much! And even if you didn't, please note that we are very much still friends and I totally understand xD (Also, I apologize if this post was totally awkward and messy--I'm still figuring this whole beta thing out.)

  4. Congrats, girl! Now that I know your deadline, I'll do my absolute best to finish my reading it before March 17th. This is so exciting for you!!!

*sighs* I still don't have any definite answers on Realm Makers yet... Still got to ask my parents, but even if the expenses weren't an issue, me traveling alone would certainly be (my parents are a wee bit overprotective). But I hope that it will all work out because I would love to finally see you in person and everyone else who will be there!!!

    1. Thank you!!! (If you want, I could send you the updated copy of part 1 so you can pick up there in the edited version? I fixed some stuff up and added a few scenes, and the whole thing is just better than it was before, so I don't know if that would help you? If you'd rather stay on the same doc I totally understand, though ;))

I hope it works out too! Meeting you would be AMAZING!

    2. Oh yeah, I would definitely like to read the updated version (just cause I know that I don't want people reading the non-updated versions of my books, because as the author every word that I change makes it 100% better XD)

      :D It WOULD BE!

  5. *SCREECHES* BETA READING TIME!!! This is the book you had asked me before to beta-read right? Because I am still TOTALLY on board! I've been wanting to read the Pentegreen books since you first mentioned them on your blog. It's been like YEARS. EEEEEEEEEP!!!!!!! SO EXCITED. And I barely batted an eye at that 120k. Burning Thorns was 113k, and it's not even my longest book. XD We're just destined to write epics, yeah? Hehe.

Also REALM MAKERSSSS!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! I seriously can't stop screaming they you get to go! I really really really reallyyyy hope I'll be able to as well. I WANT TO MEET YOU SO BAD. *FLAILS*

(Here's hoping it's not absolute and total TRASH xD) And I knew you wouldn't freak out at the length, haha. I always MEAN to write short books and then they end up so stinkin' long. So...my bad luck xD

YES!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! I desperately hope you're able to make it, because I WANT TO MEET YOU TOOOOOOO <3 <3 <3

  12. Whooo hooo! Congratulations! This is a huge milestone and it's worth celebrating!!!!

Sadly, I cannot sign up to beta read for you at this time. *sobs* It's taking all my willpower not to sign up, because your story sounds awesome!!! But we are going to be moving in Feb/March and I know that boxes are going to take over my life and I won't be able to devote the attention required to give good feedback.

    1. Yes! I'm pretty excited :D

I totally understand, believe me. Moving is huge, and you definitely need to focus on that. But maybe sometime else I'll give these folks who want to right now but can't, a chance to read it. xD

  13. Okay, so I actually so your post shortly after it went up and I instantly went to sign up...and then I paused while filling it out and thought-do I actually have time to do this??

And I thought about it, and decided I would wait. I really don't know if I could read the whole thing and give you some serious feedback. Just busy.

That being said, I REALLY WANT TO READ THIS and if you don't get a lot of beta readers, just send me a quick email and I'll try to squeeze in some edits for you. :)

  14. AHHH, I REALLY WANT TO READ YOUR BOOK, FAITH! But alas, due to the length of your novel (WHICH BY THE WAY IS FANTASTIC BECAUSE LONG BOOKS ARE MY JAM), and the fact that I legit go back to school this week, I just won’t have the time to get enough of it read by mid-March. So I guess I’ll have to hang back and wait with the others until this beauty is a published, shiny new book in Barnes and Nobles. <3 but best of luck with this new beta experience!
