Why I Still Love Frozen

(I'm so sorry this post comes so late! I missed yesterday but am making up for it now ;))

Kristen Bell, Idina Menzel, Josh Gad, Jonathan Groff, and Santino Fontana in Frozen (2013)

A sappy story of two sisters.

The story of a girl scared of her powers who must learn to control them.

A movie where comic relief is everything until suddenly things get dark.

A film that deals with the triumph of non-romantic love.

Yes, there's been a million movies that use aspects of Frozen, and the movie itself is overhyped and overdone. We've all sung the songs a million times, and heaven knows we'd never watch it again unless our little siblings BEG us...because it was an animated movie we actually liked when it came out and now we're done with it. (You'd never admit it, but you watched it 47 times in two weeks when it first came out on DVD.)

And  now you can't bear to look at it.

I understand those feelings. I actually did something similar with a movie called Interstellar--one sme of y'all have probably seen. It's a Christopher Nolan film. Very well-made, gorgeous special effects, a mostly plausible plot, excellent acting, the first film I ever heard "strong language" (unfortunately), and altogether the kind of movie I love to obsess over. I watched it so many times I could recite every word (except aforementioned strong language.) It was amazing. I loved it.

Until I didn't.

One day I just got tired of the thing, and when I was allowed to watch a movie, I moved on to something else. It didn't even affect me that much. It was just something that happened.

I think that's what's happened to most of us with Frozen.

I never allowed that to happen with me. My parents actually banned us from watching it for personal reasons not long after we bought it, and so when we were allowed to watch it again, it was special again and we went into it with fresh eyes.

And the most recent time I watched Frozen, I was blown away.

Here are some things that make me still love Frozen despite the fact that it may have been overhyped and the songs can get tiring after a while:

>Anna is me. Some people classify her merely as a Maniac Pixie Dream Girl...but if that's true then that's what I am. She's clumsy, yet still endearing; she loves chocolate. She's definitely more of a bubbly extrovert than I am, but her clumsiness and vivacious love for life make me adore her and, while watching, murmur "Yes!" every few seconds when she did something.

>The sister story is something that I love. As someone with three sisters myself, I feel like healthy sister relationships (and not just healthy, but realistic) is something I never get enough of. Brothers are a much more common trope for some reason. But Elsa and Anna love each other deeply and do what they do FOR THEIR SISTER. They also don't get along perfectly--the opening scene, in my opinion, is a perfect depiction of sisters who love each other ("Anna, go back to sleep!!!")

>Can we discuss the realisticness of the characters for a minute, too? Obviously it's weird that Anna would be such an extrovert after having spent thirteen years of her life locked up someplace, but at the same time...she and Elsa both have fairly realistic expectations of life (Elsa lives in constant fear, while it's clear that Anna's been doing a bit of digging into the romance novels). Kristoff is isolated, which he believes is just because he wants to be...but then deep down he's lonely too. And Hans...I could do a whole post on the unexpected villain, and you never thought you'd call Frozen a cautionary tale, but in the end I might say it is! Charming guy shows up professing love...and then turns out to only care about himself. How common is this in our world???

>Olaf is my favorite and he's hilarious. That is all.

>The pacing is brilliant. I don't think I have any complaints on that front. It moves fast enough to keep you interested and on the edge of your seat but not so fast that you never get a chance to know the characters.

>Disney has always had some of the best animation...but the way they do snow is absolutely perfect and I sometimes watch clips of the movie just to gawk at the lighting. Because whoever Disney had doing lighting on the animation in Frozen...they are the masters and I want to learn from them how to be an artist even though I have no interest in being a lighting animator. xD

>The plot twists. Come on, you know you didn't suspect any of those.

>The heart behind the story of family and sisters and true love being something that isn't always romantic. Because that's awesome.

>Also, I love that Elsa can be a strong woman without having to be labeled a strong woman without needing a man. *grins* But then Anna is also a strong woman despite the fact that she's a total romantic, so we're definitely doing away with the stereotypes here ;)

>The whole scene at Oaken's trading post because it makes me laugh SO HARD.

>And while the songs might be overplayed...they're still awesome.

I hope this post wasn't too controversial...what did y'all think? Do you still like Frozen? What's your favorite song from it (because I know you have one)? What's your favorite overhyped movie? Chat with me in the comments!

  1. Not controversial at all! I LOVE FROZEN! Except I was kinda sad it made everyone practically forget the brilliance that is Tangled. Tangled will always, always, ALWAYS be my favorite. You just can't beat it. But that doesn't mean I didn't utterly adore Frozen! It's SOOO good!

I think I'm one of the verrrry few people on this earth who isn't tired of it. Honestly? I've only seen it probably about 3 times. SHOCKING I KNOW! But I don't have a real young sibling or children watching it 20 times a day like a lot of people, so I haven't yet gotten sick of it. Though I do have a friend with young children who watches it ALL. THE. TIME. and she's gotten a bit tired of it, so yeah. The struggle is real. XD

But anyways. Everything about this movie is amazing. Your list was spot on. The characters, the sister relationship (loved it SO MUCH!!!), the message. You're so right that they portrayed Elsa and Anna as strong females without shoving the message down our throats like most stories these days. And the surprise of Hans was pretty great. Although...I totally called that one. *sheepish grin* When they introduced Kristoff as the love interest I was like, "Oh, so that means Hans either dies or is evil, and since this is a kid's movie, I doubt they'd kill off Anna's first love sooo yep, he's evil." Sometimes I think I study stories a little too much...

But wow, this is getting rambly. I just love fangirling over this movie. I'm still totally a fan!

    1. I hadn't seen Tangled before seeing Frozen, I'm afraid...but YES! That one is so good <3

It's not that shocking! And that definitely makes sense. If I'd seen it that many times (and if our parents had let us, haha) I might feel the same way.

I try so hard to let plot twists surprise me unless it's a story where the author is notorious for plot twists...but yeah you're right xD That's okay.

      Awesome! *high-fives*

  2. No, just no. Not a fan of Frozen, sorry. I'm happy you like it, but not for me. XD

  3. I get ya. My little sister loves frozen, but my older sister and I... no. I have probably only seen three times, though. I have a really big problem with overhyped movies: my brain won't let me like them. It is a cool story, and my older sis and I like making conections to other things. Hopefully one day my mind will let me like it.
One movie I obsessed about too much was Les Mis. Man, that was crazy.

  4. I LOVE FROZEN. I used to have every song from that movie memorized. xD Great post!

  5. Don’t worry - I didn’t think it was that controversial!

Funny story: I . . . have never actually seen Frozen. (Correction: I have seen five minutes of the last part. I don’t count that.) But somehow I know all the words to Let It Go???? Don’t know how that would have happened . . . but it did.

Anyways, I might watch it someday. Might not. I tend to be really skeptical towards super-hyped movies that aren’t in my immediate fantasy/action/adventure genre (like, I haven’t seen The Greatest Showman either). I’ll probably end up watching it eventually, though....

Fun post! I’m glad you ended up posting instead of disappearing off the face of the Internet!

    1. Okay, good xD

That's okay. And that song is popular so it's okay. ;)

You should! And you should definitely watch The Greatest Showman too. They're both such good movies. <3

      And me too! Thanks!

  6. My feelings on Frozen are...complicated. On one hand, I loved the non-romantic love twist (so good! Finally there's no true love's first kiss stuff going on!) and yay for sisters! (though I only have one, out of all my siblings). on the other hand, I was tired of it before it even came out on DVD (or before I'd seen it, to be honest) and I didn't think it was really that original (The Snow Queen is very similar, in fact, I think Frozen was based on it, and the Snow Queen also deals with non-romantic sibling love) and I absolutely loved Tangled and wished people gave it as much attention as they gave Frozen.
However, I agree with a lot of these points--especially the animation!! My goodness, the animation in movies these days is sooo amazing.

    1. I loved it too!!! But I agree. :P Tangled is so good too, and it really does get neglected in the wake of a box-office monster like Frozen.

But animation has gotten SO AMAZING <3

    2. Having said that, I've just started listening to the Broadway version of Frozen and I'm actually quite enjoying it. :D Have you ever listened/seen the Broadway musical? Its got heaps of new songs that have not yet been overplayed, so that's, for me, part of the appeal :)

  7. YES, I LOVE FROZEN. I only watched it for the first time this May and I adored it. It is so incredibly deep, the themes so resonant, the relationships sketched out so beautifully. The animation is stupendous - and Olaf is the shining heart of the story. I loved it!!

  9. Frozen is such a cute, wonderful movie!! <3 Yes, I've been sick and tired of the songs like everyone else, but it's really good nonetheless.

I agree with you. It's adorable and meaningful and the characters are just... <3

    1. I've gotten fairly tired of the songs after forever knowing them too, but they're still really great.

And the adorableness too! Finally, a movie with depth that I'm happy to watch with my WHOLE family!

  12. I still love Frozen and I don't care who knows it! I love the film because Elsa and Anna are literally me and my sister. Plus the music and the plot twists and just all the awesomeness.

  13. I watched Frozen on the plane ride to England a couple years ago, and I remember thinking it was pretty funny and fairly good. I don't watch many cartoon movies now, for some reason...

    1. Aww, that's actually sort of awful! You need to watch more cartoons, stat. ;)

    2. It's not that I don't like them or anything, mostly because I /rarely/ watch movies. And when I do...it tends to be a more action-y movie. Like I'm still catching up on the Marvel movies. Just watched the new Star Treks for the first time. And of course, gotta watch LotR every now and then. So when you watch like..two or three movies a month, you gotta pick the ones that are really calling your name, lol

      Delete
    3. If it helps...I just saw the new Star Wars (Solo) on Saturday...after it's already been out for two months!

      Delete
    4. Oh yes, LotR definitely takes priority...and I'm seriously behind on Marvel too, so don't feel bad. XD That definitely helps. What did you think of Solo?

    5. Honestly, I loved it! I think I was expecting some horrible movie after all the reviews...but I thought it was great! Funny, entertaining, no use's of the Lord's name, and not predictable. Some great action scenes, and, of course, the Falcon!!!! (Don't laugh...but my car is named after the Falcon, lol.)

    6. I thought it was definitely a very fun ride! Not my favorite SW movie ever, but then, that really takes something (what can top Empire, honestly?) And I would never laugh at that!!! I love it!

  14. LOL, I still use "YooHoo, big summer blow out" to get my younger brother's attention. Works like a charm.

I really love Frozen, even if a lot of people don't. Sure, I don't watch it as much as I used to, but I still love it a ton and probably always will.

    1. It definitely works! I love that whole scene XD

<3 and you don't have to watch it all that often...I don't watch my favorites THAT often myself. I like to savor movies (and books) that I love, for the reason I stated of avoiding burnout.

  15. I totally agree with all of your points! I really do love Frozen, and I feel like it gets much more hate than it deserves. I will admit, listening to Let It Go a thousand times over, I have lost interest in the song, but that doesn't mean that it's not still good! I think it's a wonderful movie, with an awesome soundtrack, beautiful visuals, a great story, and complex, likable characters. It definitely deserves the hype that it's rendered. ^_^

    1. Haha...I definitely understand that Let it Go can get old (my sisters sing it a lot more than I'd ever seek it out, myself) but you summed it up so nicely <3

  16. I loved Frozen to death at first, but always had some kind of a suspicion about it. I have noticed that a lot of animated movies are pushing liberal agendas recently...

That being said - I still love the main part of the story, and most of the songs (I'm still not over disliking "Let it Go" yet....). I just don't watch it that often.

    Awesome post, Faith!

    1. *cough*Zootopia*cough*The Last Jedi* Yes, I definitely know what you mean :P I don't think Frozen has one, unless it's the whole "follow your own heart" thing (not that that's anything new in Disney).

      I definitely agree. <3

    2. I'm interested now, what do you mean about pushing liberal agendas??

  17. Honestly, I love Frozen. I don't watch it often because my sisters were obsessed and so it got old, but every once in a while, I realize I still love it. Elsa's humanness, her fear, her love shown the wrong way. Anna's clumsiness, persistence, and caring recklessness. Kristoff's chivalry, and sense of duty, and awkwardness. And Sven the reindeer. Because everyone needs a Sven, hahaha :). Also, the snow is gorgeous!
