Twelve Days of Christmas link--up: My Favorite Christmas Songs

by - December 23, 2017

Hey, everybody! I feel like I've been away FOREVER. But, hey! I'm back, and I will be again soon with a huge annual wrapup post of my favorite things from this year in several categories. Be on the lookout for that!

It's so beautiful here today. We got about six inches of snow, and I'm in LOVE with snow again. I'd share a picture with y'all, but...unfortunately, I didn't get any while there was still light out, and I'm now writing this at 5:30 in the evening, while it's dark like midnight out there. :(

I also finished school for the semester! And got A's in just about everything!

But anyway, here's today's posts, featuring some of my absolute favorite Christmas songs! And this is, by the way, part of a link-up with Faith Potts' 12 Days of Christmas Party, so be sure to check out the rest of that post!

Have a playlist--because today's post is part of an epic link-up for Christmas with Faith Potts of Stories by Firefly! Today I'll be sharing with you a bunch of my favorite Christmas carols and going super in-depth as to why I like them. Ready? Good, because here we go.

Carol of the Bells

A brand new Christmas album from my favorite artist????!!! I'll take it! I love Lindsey Stirling so much, and this album has just the right blend of nostalgia and new material, with songs ranging from the breathtaking "Silent Night" (finally, a version that sounds fresh and exciting!) to the funny "You're a Mean One, Mr. Grinch", to the brand-new breakout hit "Christmas C'mon." My personal favorite on this album, however, has got to be "Carol of the Bells." Always one of my favorite Christmas carols, to see one of my favorite musicians take it on and come up with such a beautiful rendition is amazing.

I'll Be Home for Christmas

JoshGroban Noel.jpg

Only this version, mind you!
Most renditions of "I'll Be Home for Christmas" are so sappy and ridiculous...I can't stand hearing that one come in in the grocery store. I'll often run to get away from it (we're being honest here...XD) But this version, by Josh Groban, and I have a love-hate relationship. Very love-hate.

See, normally "I'll Be Home for Christmas" sounds like it's just somebody who's homesick for whatever reason. I don't know. It just never really makes much of an impact on me. But on Noel, Josh Groban dubs over the instrumental sections of the song with the voices of soldiers and their families, calling home on Christmas Day. It's absolutely heartbreaking. Try listening to the voice of a soldier's family member wishing them a happy Christmas without tearing up. You've gotta be made of stone.

The Angel Song

Christmas (Jaci Velasquez album).jpg

Most of this album is fairly cheesy and feel-good-y, but I absolutely love this song for the depth it offers. It's a beautiful reminder that Christmas is about Jesus and the new life he offers. <3

Baby Boy

Into The Silent Night (Extended)
I got to hear this song live in concert when for KING AND COUNTRY came to Maine, and it's absolutely wonderful. Just a great anthem about how Jesus is the greatest of all kings, even though he came to earth as just a baby. Christmas songs that speak of the majesty of Christ are some of my favorites, and so I love "Baby Boy." It actually mentions the seeming oxymoron of Christmas: "The war was won--by a baby boy." This song is a great reminder of how powerful our Christ is, even when he was a brand-new baby. He was God then and he always will be.

Behold the Lamb of God

Behold the Lamb of God Double Album

Did any of y'all watch the livestream of this concert last week? If you did, let me know! It was absolutely magical, and they did one of my favorite songs by Andrew Peterson, "Carry the Fire." This album walks the listener through the entire Christmas story, starting with the exodus from Egypt and all the way up through the shepherds to John the Baptist and beyond. It's absolutely beautiful, and I cannot recommend it enough.
This is just one song off the album, but I definitely recommend you buy the whole thing for next year. :D

Christmas/Sarajevo 12/24

Christmas Eve and Other Stories

What author could make a playlist and not include Trans-Siberian Orchestra on there someplace?? (Kidding. If you don't like them, it's okay.) But this song has an absolutely beautiful story behind it. Turns out, there was a cellist from the Eastern European city of Sarajevo who left home to go be a world-famous musician. (I don't remember his name and don't feel like searching, but if you want to, please, by all means...) When he returned, it was to discover the Bosnian war in full swing. Every night, when bombers passed by overhead, he didn't head for shelter, he went out to stand on the rubble where the fountain had once been and played Christmas carols. It's a gorgeous reminder that in the midst of evil and bloodshed, Jesus' birth is still the focus of December 25. Even in the darkest places, he still shines through.

Some Honorable Mentions

Just a Girl by Brandon Heath

I Heard the Bells on Christmas Day

Peace On Earth CD - By: Casting Crowns

The grand finale and my absolute favorite. In November I fell in love with Henry Wadsworth Longfellow's poetry; it's just so beautiful and heartrending. His epic poem Evangeline is a wonderful classic that everyone should read.

But when his wife died Longfellow wrote a poem, a poem called "I Heard the Bells on Christmas Day." Casting Crowns borrowed the words of that poem and set them to music, music that is absolutely perfect. I legit started crying the first time I heard this song. Give it a listen. You won't regret it.

Then rang the bells more loud and deep
"God is not dead, nor does he sleep!"
The wrong shall fail, the right  prevail
With peace on earth, good will to men!

Chat with me, lovelies! What are your favorite Christmas carols? Are you excited for Christmas day? Tell me all the things! I've missed y'all!

  2. I have to disagree with you. If someone doesn't like Trans Siberian Orchestra, they need their head checked. XD (I'm kidding, peeps.)

Glad to see you popping back in for a moment. I've missed your posts. :)

  3. Way to go with school! Congrats on surviving this far. :D And Lindsey Stirling's new album is AMAZING. I mean, absolute genius, right? One of my favorite (obscure) Christmas carols is the Wexford Carol. It's super pretty in a minor key, haunting way. (Celtic Woman does a great version.) It's great to see you back!
Merry Christmas! (And Happy New Year, too!)

  4. FAAAAAAAITH! *TACKLE-GLOMPS* I HAVE MISSED YOU! Congrats on being finished with school for the semester and getting such high grades. That is fantastic! :D

This post made my Christmas music-loving heart happy! And WAIT. Lindsey Stirling has a new Christmas album out???? I MUST LISTEN TO THIS. And she did a version of Carol of the Bells? That's like one of my TOP favorite Christmas songs. EEEEEE!!!!

So you don't like I'll Be Home for Christmas either? :O I thought I was alone in this! Yes, it always sounds so very sappy. It just kind of annoys me, even though I think the origin of the song is pretty powerful. And it looks like this version you shared finally for once captures the true meaning of it. I need to give it a listen too!

Trans-Siberian Orchestra is obviously epic! Though I don't listen to them NEARLY as much as I should. I must remedy this!

I hear Baby Boy on the radio now and again and it's so sweet. ^_^ Just a Girl is another that plays on the radio and I enjoy.

I'm not sure I've heard the rest of these, but obviously I need to now! (I would listen to them at this moment but I'm not really in a place I can belt out music so I'll have to wait. XD)

Thank you for sharing this fabulousness with us! And MERRY CHRISTMAS! I hope yours is a beautiful one! <333

YES YOU HAVE TO LISTEN TO IT! That's one of my favorite songs on the album, and you need to check it out. :D

Yes! This version is easily the best of all of them, and it really captures the real meaning. We can dislike the other versions together, though. XD

I LOOOOOOVE Trans-Siberian Orchestra, and yes, you need to listen to them more. 'Nough said.

      I love those two, a lot. :)

LISTEN TO THEM, CHRISTINE! And I hope you have a Merry Christmas too!

  8. I'm listening to the Lindsey Sterling video now - it sounds really cool!

If you like Trans-Siberian Orchestra, I encourage you to listen to Manheim Steamroller. They do a mix of obscure carols from the Renaissance to modern Christmas Carols. They are really awesome!

I'll have to listen to the rest of these videos!

P.S. That Josh Groban video - I nearly cried when I heard the soldiers. OUCH. Reminds me of the origins of the song - if I remember correctly, it's from the POV of a soldier either in WWI or WWII.

    1. I LOOOOVE Manheim Steamroller. Their rendition of Coventry Carol gets me every time. :P

The Josh Groban one is so heartbreaking. It HURTS!!!! And that would make it make a lot more sense--I've always wondered exactly what it meant.

      Merry Christmas, Catherine!

  9. Ugh, I love I Heard The Bells On Christmas Day. I wrote a short story based on the song on my blog last year for Christmas... I performed that song with my choir a couple of years ago and it was one of my favorite songs we ever performed. ;) Henry Longfellow was also inspired to write the poem because not only did his wife die, but his son was badly injured in the war and had only recently come home. So he was very much in despair about the hope of Christmas, but somehow still had the hope in God to write that last verse.

  11. Aww, I LOVE SO MANY OF THESE. That Casting Crowns one has always been a favorite (though I didn't know the whole thing was from a poem!), the Trans-Siberian Orchestra I just discovered this Christmas, but they are wonderful, For King & Country is awesome, Josh Groban is always incredible, and I will have to check out that Lindsey Stirling album! I've only listened to Carol of the Bells so far, but that one is pretty good. :)

Congratulations on finishing the semester alive, haha, and with A's no less. Hope you had a lovely Christmas, and that you have a marvelous New Year!!!
